AMEBEATO – THE AJUDA NATIONAL PALACE
The Ajuda Palace, also known as the Royal Palace of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, is a historical monument from the 19th century. It was originally built in wood to withstand earthquakes and was the residence of the royal family until the establishment of the republic in 1910.
At the beginning of the republic, it was closed, but the concern to preserve all the cultural and artistic heritage meant that all the other royal palaces brought their respective contents to be kept here, and it was as a museum that it reopened in 1938.
It houses the finest and richest works of goldsmithery, jewelry, silver, gold, porcelain, tapestries, paintings, etc.
In September 1974, it suffered a violent fire in which around 500 paintings disappeared.
Today, the Museum has the only collection of decorative arts and collections from the 15th to the 20th centuries, a vault in the west wing where the jewels of the Portuguese Royal Crown are kept, two floors where the private apartments are located and the noble rooms for official ceremonies.
The Ajuda National Palace is also home to the Ajuda National Library, the Ministry of Culture, the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage and the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art.
