BEATO AND PENHA DE FRANÇA FIREFIGHTERS –still waiting for a permanent fire station

In a summer marked by wildfires that consumed hectares of forest and put communities at risk, the Volunteer Firefighters of Beato and Penha de França once again proved why they are considered one of Lisbon’s most dedicated and resilient forces. Yet, despite their vital role, they still lack a definitive solution for their headquarters.
The departure from Rua do Grilo — which, despite circulation constraints, represented a significant social and community presence — left a void in the heart of Beato. Today, operating from temporary facilities, the firefighters work under better conditions than before, but still far from what would be ideal.
A new fire station is planned for Rua Gualdim Pais, but the project remains on paper. “It’s an absolute priority. These men and women deserve a space worthy of their mission.”
A story of courage and closeness
Founded in 1932, the brigade has accumulated decades of service to the city and the country. From fighting urban and forest fires to rescuing the injured and ill, their work goes far beyond the parish. “They are our first line of defense. When everyone else runs away, they step forward.”
For many, the station on Rua do Grilo was more than operational — it was a meeting point, a symbol of safety and belonging. “There was always movement, a sign that we were protected,” recalls Maria João, a local shopkeeper.
The impact of their absence
With the firefighters’ departure, space was opened to redevelop Beato’s central area, but new challenges also emerged. “We lost a daily presence that brought life to the neighborhood.”
The temporary setup, although more comfortable than before, does not solve structural issues. “We can’t remain in a provisional state forever,” warns a member of the brigade.
An uncertain future
Lisbon City Council and the Parish Council acknowledge the urgency. The new station on Rua Gualdim Pais is seen as the solution, but the timeline remains unclear. “We’re working to move forward as quickly as possible,” said an official source.
Meanwhile, the firefighters continue to respond to emergencies with the same dedication as always. “They may not have the station they deserve, but they have the heart and courage that never failed them.”
