The beginning of this story dates back to the time after the Carnation Revolution – 25th April 1974. At that time, the idea was to create a Residents’ Committee of Bairro Madre de Deus in the parish of Beato, in Lisbon, by an organised group of residents, who held several meetings and did important local work over several years, but did not formally establish the association. Some of these residents still live in Bairro da Madre de Deus.
In 2016, with the opening of the public discussion period regarding the beginning of the delimitation procedure of the Execution Unit Marquês de Olhão and, with the projects presented for this area of the parish of Beato, in Bairro da Madre de Deus, the residents made several concerted efforts to form a Residents’ Association.
Later, in 2020, with the new projects, which are still under construction – the Beato Nursery and the Beato Health Unit – the idea of creating the local association gained new energy and involvement from the residents due to fears of its impact. The energy unleashed was insufficient to achieve the ideal of formalising the association.
In 2021, after deep reflection, the founders of this Association understood that their work, contribution and activity to be implemented by the association was more demanding than the territorial space of the Bairro da Madre de Deus. And for that reason and others, it was consensual that they would have to broaden their horizons and adopt a new, broader vision, regarding the existing problems in the community and its expectations, deciding how crucial it is to be in perfect collaboration with the Beato.
