PORTUGAL – LOCAL ELECTIONS 2025

Next Sunday, 12 October 2025, local elections will take place across the country, organized by the National Election Commission (CNE). On this date, citizens will elect the bodies of municipal councils, municipal assemblies, and parish councils, defining local governance for the 2026–2029 term.

Parish Councils (Juntas de Freguesia) are the level of local government closest to the population, with responsibilities ranging from the management of public spaces and urban maintenance to social, cultural, and sports support. In Lisbon, they play an essential role in maintaining direct contact between residents and the municipal administration, ensuring services such as street cleaning, garden maintenance, organization of community events, and support for local associations.

Each parish is administered by:

  • Parish Assembly (Assembleia de Freguesia) – elected by direct vote.
  • Parish Executive Board (Executivo da Junta) – chaired by the lead candidate of the most-voted list, who becomes President and selects the remaining members from among those elected on their list.

In Beato Parish (Freguesia do Beato), with 10,059 registered voters, this 2026–2029 electoral process is of particular importance, as it will determine the team responsible for managing local projects and investments — from maintaining public spaces and cultural facilities to implementing social support initiatives and community participation programs.

The CNE reminds voters that early voting is available for those unable to vote on election day, including displaced workers, students, hospitalized patients, and citizens deprived of liberty who retain their political rights.
