THE IMPORTANCE OF RUTIS FOR SENIORS: YES, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT YOU!
RUTIS (Associação Rede de Universidades da Terceira Idade) is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS) and Public Utility that provides support to the community and senior citizens, both nationally and internationally. Founded in 2005 and based in Almeirim, RUTIS plays a key role in promoting active ageing and the social integration of older citizens. The association also has a center in Porto, known as Academia RUTIS Porto.
History and Structure of RUTIS
Since its creation, RUTIS has grown significantly. It currently has 410 Universities of the Third Age (UTIs) as members, covering 65,000 senior students and 7,500 volunteer teachers who are dedicated to teaching and supporting students at the various senior universities.
The social importance of RUTIS and the Senior Universities was officially recognized by Council of Ministers Resolution no. 76/2016 of 29 November 2016. This recognition reinforces the vital role that RUTIS plays in society, providing seniors with continuous learning opportunities and promoting active and healthy ageing.
The structure of RUTIS is made up of a Board of Directors, a General Assembly and a Supervisory Board. The governing body of the Senior Universities is the General Council, which is made up of the Universidade Sénior da Nazaré (Presidency), the Universidade Sénior D. Sancho I de Almada, the Academia Sénior do Fundão and the Universidade Sénior de Gondomar.
The Network of Universities of the Third Age
The network of Universities of the Third Age (UTIs) is one of the most important pillars of RUTIS. In Portugal, RUTIS ICUs cover more than 65,000 senior students, 300 organizations and 7,500 volunteer teachers. This network works on the basis of sharing and collaboration, creating a strong and supportive community.
The ICUs offer a wide range of courses and workshops in various areas of knowledge, including computer science, the arts, history, health and well-being, among others. These activities not only promote continuous learning, but also help to combat loneliness and isolation, common problems among seniors.
Objectives and Benefits of RUTIS
The main objective of RUTIS is to provide continuous learning opportunities for senior citizens, promoting active ageing and social integration. The activities offered by the RUTIS ICUs are designed to improve the quality of life of senior citizens, providing them with a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
